    Past Continuous Tense

    This lecture introduces the concept of tenses in English, explaining present, past, and future forms with basic examples.

    Definition

    The Past Continuous Tense describes actions that were in progress at a particular time in the past. It focuses on the duration of an activity.

    Example:

    She was reading a book.

    Structure Formation

    🔹Affirmative Form

    ➤ With Singular Subjects (I, he, she, it, singular nouns)

    Subject + was + V-ing + object/complement

    Example:

    He was flying the kite.

    ➤ With Plural Subjects (we, you, they, plural nouns)

    Subject + were + V-ing + object/complement

    Example:

    The boys were making a noise.

    🔹Negative Form

    Subject + was/were + not + V-ing + object

    Example:

    He was not flying the kite.

    (Contraction: wasn't / weren't)

    🔹Interrogative Form

    Was/Were + subject + V-ing + object?

    Example:

    Was he flying the kite?

    🔹Negative Interrogative Form

    Was/Were + subject + not + V-ing + object?

    Example:

    Was he not flying the kite?

    🔹Wh-Question Form

    Question Word + was/were + subject + V-ing + object?

    Wh-words include: what, when, where, why, who, how, etc.

    Example:

    Why was he flying the kite?

    🔹Negative Wh-Question Form

    Question Word + was/were + subject + not + V-ing + object?

    Example:

    Why was he not flying the kite?

    Uses of Past Continuous Tense

    1️⃣ Continued Action in the Past

    Used to show an action that was continuing at a specific moment in the past.

    Example:

    Max was dancing with joy at the party.

    2️⃣ Background Description (Scene Setting)

    Used to describe the background of a story.

    Example:

    I was standing outside the bus station.

    3️⃣ Past Continuous + Past Simple

    (Long action + Short action)

    Past Continuous shows the longer action.

    Past Simple shows the shorter action that interrupts it.

    Examples:

    • When the phone rang, I was studying.
    • When the teacher entered the class, the students were making a noise.

    The ringing/entering happened suddenly (short action).

    Studying/making noise was already in progress (long action).

    4️⃣ Past Continuous with “While”

    Used to show two actions happening at the same time in the past.

    Examples:

    • He fell asleep while he was watching TV.
    • She was reading a book while he was cooking.

    Signal Words for Past Continuous

    These words often indicate the Past Continuous tense:

    • When → short action interrupts longer action
    • While → two actions happening at the same time

    Common Mistakes in Past Continuous

    ❌ I was seeing him yesterday.

    ✅ I saw him yesterday.

    ❌ I was studying when he was coming.

    ✅ I was studying when he came.

    ❌ What he was doing?

    ✅ What was he doing?

    ❌ I was reading a book when he was cooking.

    ✅ I was reading a book while he was cooking.

    Exam Tips
