The Present Continuous Tense describes:
- Actions happening at the moment of speaking
- Temporary situations
- Planned future arrangements
- Changing situations
Structure Formation
Present Continuous is formed using:
Subject + am/is/are + verb + -ing
1️⃣ With Subject “I”
🔹 Affirmative Form
I + am + V-ing + object/complement
Example:
I am taking tea.
2️⃣ With Subjects: He, She, It, Singular Nouns
🔹 Affirmative Form
Subject + is + V-ing + object/complement
Example:
Sam is flying a kite.
3️⃣ With Subjects: We, You, They, Plural Nouns
🔹 Affirmative Form
Subject + are + V-ing + object/complement
Example:
They are watching a movie.
🔹 Negative Form
Subject + am/is/are + not + V-ing + object
Examples:
- I am not taking tea.
- Sam is not flying a kite.
- They are not watching a movie.
🔹 Interrogative Form
Am/Is/Are + subject + V-ing + object?
Examples:
- Am I taking tea?

🔹 Negative Interrogative Form

Question Word + am/is/are + subject + V-ing + object?
Wh-words include: what, when, where, why, who, how, etc.
Examples:

Question Word + am/is/are + subject + not + V-ing + object?
Examples:

Uses of Present Continuous Tense
1️⃣ Action Happening Now
He is reading a book at the moment.
2️⃣ Temporary Situation
The children are playing on the roof.
3️⃣ Planned Future Arrangement
(Used for fixed future plans)

4️⃣ Changing Situations
- He is getting older day by day.
- The weather is becoming colder.
5️⃣ Exclamatory Sentences
Present Continuous is often used after expressions like Look! and Listen!

- Look! The bus is coming.
- Listen! The baby is crying.
Present Continuous with Time Expressions

🔹 Stative Verbs (Not Normally Used in Continuous Form)
Stative verbs describe states, not actions. They are usually used in Present Simple, not Present Continuous.

see, hear, smell, taste, feel, seem, appear
2️⃣ Verbs of Emotion
want, need, wish, like, love, hate, desire, prefer
3️⃣ Verbs of Thinking
know, believe, understand, remember, suppose, consider, forget, imagine, think (opinion), agree, realize, doubt, mean

Common Errors with Stative Verbs
❌ He is wanting a new laptop.
✅ He wants a new laptop.
❌ I am not remembering his phone number.
✅ I do not remember his phone number.
❌ He is having a car.
✅ He has a car.
❌ This flower is smelling sweet.
✅ This flower smells sweet.
Important Note About “Have”
“Have” can be used in continuous form when it shows an activity (not possession).
✅ She is having lunch now.
(Here, “having” means eating.)

Exam Tips
✔ Always use am/is/are before V-ing.
